Sustainability & Eco-Certifications FAQ
Your Questions About Our Eco-Friendly Swimwear Answered
At Main Design, sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's at the core of everything we create. All our products are made from recycled or bio-based materials, and we're committed to transparency about our environmental impact. Here are answers to the most common questions about our eco-certifications and sustainable practices.
Our Certifications
What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is one of the world's most recognized certifications for textile safety. It guarantees that our fabrics have been tested for harmful substances and are safe for human skin and the environment. Every component of our certified products—from the fabric to the threads and accessories—meets strict safety criteria.
What does GOTS Certified mean?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading certification for organic textiles. Our GOTS-certified cotton towels and ponchos are made from organically grown cotton, processed without harmful chemicals, and produced under fair working conditions. It's the gold standard for organic textiles.
What is ECONYL Regenerated Nylon?
ECONYL is a revolutionary regenerated nylon made from ocean waste, fishing nets, and other nylon waste. It's exactly the same quality as virgin nylon but with a dramatically lower environmental impact. By choosing ECONYL swimwear, you're helping clean our oceans while enjoying premium performance fabric.
What is REPREVE?
REPREVE is a certified recycled performance fiber made from post-consumer plastic bottles. Each piece of REPREVE swimwear helps keep plastic bottles out of landfills and oceans. It offers the same durability, stretch, and chlorine resistance as traditional swimwear fabrics.
What does 1% for the Planet/Ocean mean?
We're proud members of 1% for the Planet and 1% for the Ocean, which means we donate at least 1% of our annual sales to environmental organizations focused on protecting our planet and oceans. Your purchase directly supports ocean conservation efforts.
Our Materials
Are all your products made from sustainable materials?
Yes! 100% of our products are made from either recycled materials (like ECONYL regenerated nylon, REPREVE recycled polyester, or recycled nylon) or bio-based natural materials (like organic cotton and organic linen). We never use virgin synthetic materials.
What's the difference between recycled and bio-based materials?
Recycled materials (like ECONYL and REPREVE) are made from post-consumer or post-industrial waste, giving new life to materials that would otherwise end up in landfills or oceans. Bio-based materials (like our organic cotton and linen) come from renewable plant sources grown without harmful pesticides or chemicals. Both are sustainable choices with different environmental benefits.
How do I care for my sustainable swimwear to make it last longer?
To extend the life of your eco-friendly swimwear: rinse in cold water after each use, hand wash with mild detergent, avoid wringing or twisting, lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight, and avoid contact with rough surfaces. Proper care helps your sustainable pieces last for years, reducing environmental impact.
Verification & Transparency
How can I verify your certifications?
All our certifications are legitimate and verifiable. You can find certification details on each product page, and we're happy to provide certification documentation upon request. Visit the official websites of OEKO-TEX, GOTS, ECONYL, and REPREVE to learn more about their certification processes.
Why is sustainable swimwear important?
Traditional swimwear is made from virgin synthetic materials derived from petroleum, contributing to plastic pollution and carbon emissions. Our recycled and bio-based materials reduce ocean plastic waste, lower carbon footprints, conserve resources, and support a circular economy—all while delivering the same premium quality and performance you expect.
What happens to my swimwear at the end of its life?
While our recycled materials are designed for durability and longevity, we encourage you to extend the life of your pieces through proper care and repair. When your swimwear reaches the end of its usable life, check with local textile recycling programs. We're continuously working on take-back and recycling programs to close the loop.
